Fe Fi Phở Fum

In an effort to add a little culture into the lives of our children, we decided to venture out for something other than Cafe Rio or a Happy Meal.  We took them to the Green Papaya for dinner for Vietnamese Phở.  I'd never had Phở before either until a few months ago.  Really it's just a bowl of broth with some cellophane noodles, and thin slices of meat.  Not much different than the Ramen my kids would eat on a regular basis if I let them.  It's also possible to add bean sprouts, Thai basil, plum sauce, lime, Siracha hot sauce or jalapeno if you so desire.  All of the above are totally optional though, and none of which were found in Josh's bowl.

Josh announced quite loudly that he didn't like Phở, wasn't going to try it, we couldn't make him, no way, no how, not ever.  All the others politely tried it, some liked it, some not as much.  Josh wouldn't even stick a chop stick in the bowl.  I will not eat Phở in a pot.  I will not eat it I will not!!  I will not eat it anywhere!  Matt even bet him that he would eat a whole jalapeno slice if he would just take three bites of noodles.  Let's just say Matt got the spicy end of the jalapeno and Josh still would not eat any!

I wish my iphone had a faster shutter speed because I missed the shot of him forcing himself to violently gag and then throw up in the bowl.  The pics also don't document the giant crocodile tears streaming down his face.  Why yes!!!  We were quite the spectacle at the Green Papaya this evening.  If the Tiger Mom was there she would have made him gag the whole pot down.  All in all I couldn't stop laughing at the scene.

Laura - You guys are awesome to try Pho. My husband served a Viet mission in DC, so it was something we ate regularly! Different Viet places make it differently, but it's basically as you said. There is also one with viet meat balls in it that is also good - my favorite noodles spouts and beef strips. There is a great place for better Viet food in downtown -I think it's called Viet Garden. -really good :) Fun post!

After our foray to the Asian Star last week where Josh had finally tasted the citrus chicken and then practically licked his plate, I thought you were going to say that he finally tried Pho and declared it a winner. Oh well. Baca's suggestion: next time you try for some food culture, drop off Josh at Baca and Pop's house where he will be fixed Kraft Mac and Chees and can eat the whole thing by himself -- no gag reflex in sight.

I'm certain this kid's going someplace in south asia for his mission. Laos, Vietnam...is there a mission in Myanmar yet?
