It seems everyone I talk to is gushing about how excited they are for school to be over. They can't wait for freedom, carefree days, no where to be, nothing to do. I don't know what kind of self entertaining, productive, non squabbling, non-TV watching kids they have, but certainly not mine. Let me talk to those mothers in August. They may be singing a different tune about then.
One one hand I really do love summer vacation. It is nice to have no schedule. I love not having to set an alarm. But then again part of the issue for me is that there is no schedule. I am the scheduler, organizer, entertainment committee... ALL SUMMER LONG. So when my kids ask if they can hang out at Classic Skate (or some other such awful place), I have no excuse. Because really we have no where else we need to be.
Summers are way different now from when I was growing up. I am of the generation that said goodbye to their mom in the morning, came home again for lunch, and then was called in to dinner. I'm pretty sure my friends and I entertained ourselves for most of the summer. We produced plays, played in the creek next to our house, and I even walked up to 7-11 a couple of times and crossed a very busy street when I was forbidden to do so. I actually remember, at the age of 9 or so, my mom dropping me and my 7 year old sister at the movie theater to watch summer movies ALONE! Can you even imagine such a thing today?
I'm accused of being the entertainment committee for my children. It's true. We go, go, go all summer long. We do have a lot of fun together, but it really is quite exhausting. My kids arise early (6:30), and don't crash until late (11:00ish) on summer evenings. There is no down time. And it is truly unfortunate that unless they have something specific to do my kids will gravitate to TV or computer. I'm not looking forward to having to harp on them to turn off what ever electronic device they are recently drawn to.
So I'm making a list, checking it twice, and going to make sure that we stay busy this summer. Ready or not here it comes!!!

I would love to get ahold of your summer checklist. My kids have started compiling theirs and I am in a bit of a panic myself that there will be too many boredom times. I have wonderful plans I would like to do with the kids, but not sure if they will like it as much as I want them to. Any help I can get, the better. Thanks!
