On our second day Matt decided to see if he could actually walk on water. Turns out he can't. Just got a nasty slice on some coral. In his defense he was boogie boarding and kept scraping his knees on the coral. Rather than paddle back in he decided to stand up and walk on the coral. I like to tease him about this fact that he thought he could actually walk upon the coral.
It was quite a gash that fortunately didn't require stitches, and fortunately didn't attract the attention of any sharks. It bled quite for a long time.
Later that evening his foot started to swell a bit. Based on his past medical history we decided not to mess around so we called a professional...the condo security guard. Apparently when he is not chasing kids off elevators when they press one too many buttons, he likes to pretend he is a doctor. He made a house call to examine the foot. He spent quite a long time studying the wound, and then declared Matt should soak the foot in vinegar, as that is what all the local surfers do when they get scraped by coral. He should soak it all night if possible.
Matt didn't care that much about his foot so he only soaked it for a few hours before bed. But it worked! Although still painful, the swelling went down, he was able to use the the rest of vacation, and didn't go home an amputee. Vinegar the wonder drug!

So funny! I have a scar on my foot gashing my foot on coral when snorkeling in turtle bay years ago. It took forever to heal and was pretty painful! Apparently coral has all these microorganisms and bacteria that get into cuts and make them so much worse. Vinegar totally makes sense because the acidity would kill all of that. Genius surfers!
